Satellite Fire Hall

Sep 17, 2025News

The RM of Wheatlands No. 163 is now a FULL partner in the Caron/Caronport Fire Department! Our satellite fire hall, located in Mortlach, is almost complete.
What does this mean?
This means our ratepayers are NO LONGER directly charged for fire calls within our boundaries (“ratepayers” excluding railways & pipelines).
Wheatlands Council members will be a part of the decisions being made by the Caron/Caronport Fire Department.
This also changes our yearly levy to the fire department:
OLD: $20,000
NEW: $34,000.
What is a Satellite Fire Hall?
The Satellite Fire Hall is a branch of the Caron/Caronport Fire Department. It will house equipment such as a pumper truck and gear for volunteer firefighters from the RM of Wheatlands and Mortlach. It will decrease response times in our RM and benefit fire department recruitment efforts.
Who paid for the Satellite Fire Hall?
The RM of Wheatlands has borne the cost of this building and it will remain in ownership of the RM of Wheatlands. But we did not do it all alone. There have been donations of time and materials, as well as the following monetary donations to date:
RM of Caron $20,000
Caron/Caronport Fire department $40,000
CPKC $5,000
TC Energy $25,000 (for an emergency response ATV)
A couple grant and sponsorship requests are still pending.
Who pays for the operation of the Satellite Fire Hall?
The Caron/Caronport Fire Department will bear the operational costs for this Satellite Fire Hall.
Where is the Satellite Fire Hall located?
The land for the fire hall was donated by the Village of Mortlach. It is located at 219 Saskatchewan St, right across from our RM shop.
When will the Satellite Fire Hall be operational?
L7 Carpentry is the main contractor working on the Satellite Fire Hall and they are close to completion.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact our Fire Chief, Jared Mickleborough at [email protected] or 306-630-5947.
Once the hall is operational, we will announce the grand opening, stay tuned!
